James Meyer/LEANARCH Residential Project Takes Award

HERMOSA BEACH, CA (August 24, 2009) – The Green Hive, an integrated library, event center and marketplace designed to embrace, educate and promote sustainable design and building practices is pleased to announce architectural design firm LEAN Arch, Inc., founded and managed by Green Hive CCO, James R. Meyer AIA has just won a So Cal Environmental Excellence Development (SEED) award from the South Bay Business Environmental Coalition. Meyer and his team were nominated by the City of Manhattan Beach, and won the “Green Building” category based on KDC-02, their eco-friendly family residence located at 502 24th St. in Manhattan Beach.

The solar-powered home features a 4.3 KW photovoltaic array which generates enough electricity to meet the average daily needs of a family of five. In addition, the domestic hot water system includes two roof mounted panels which utilizes a drain back feature and 150 gal. insulated storage tank in order to optimize water temperatures throughout.

Certified by Build It Green and the Green Point rating system, the contemporary style home features an astounding number of recycled, recyclable, certified and toxin free finishes. Materials include recycled cotton fiber insulation, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified hardwood floors and paneling, concrete fiber panels and zero VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paints to name a few.

Designed to be naturally daylighted and ventilated, the home features radiant floor heating throughout, with smart-home technology to optimize lighting and temperature controls. The residence was featured on the 2009 South Bay Solar Homes Tour and was the only completely solar-powered home on the tour.

The home features 4 bedrooms with 4 bathrooms, powder room, kitchen by Valcucine, open living and dining areas, family room, recreation room, wine cellar, and laundry room. The open plan and large glass sliding pocket doors create both visual and physical continuity between the interior and exterior. A perforated metal stair, metal panel siding, radiant floor heating and the home’s official name, KDC-02 are a nod to "industrial chic". LEAN Arch, Inc. is committed to responsible development, redefining the modern home in response to concerns regarding energy consumption, land-use and the environment.
