The Green Hive Houses ‘Green’ Building Research

April, 2009 - A new public-private research project in Los Angeles is looking to establish itself as a one-stop shop for individuals, institutions and municipalities that want to build green. Part library, part event space, part retail outlet, Green Hive is an informational hub for sustainable building resources. “It’s meant to be a community space,” says Kris Kimble, Green Hive’s CEO.

In January, Green Hive announced a partnership with the Los Angeles Community College District, which has undertaken its own massive green building initiative at its campuses (see “Retraining the labor force,” p. 17). Teaming up with educational institutions will allow the project to seek grants and public funding for the design center, which is expected to operate based on a not-for-profit business model, Kimble says. Products and services would be selected for inclusion by a steering committee, says Kimble, a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED-AP) who previously held positions with Waste Management (NYSE: WMI) and lighting efficiency firm Sun Energy Solutions.

The Green Hive’s first location – a 6,000 square-foot site on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles that is aiming for the LEED-certification – is slated to open Fall 2009. A second Southern California location is planned for mid-2010. Ultimately, Kimble says he would like to expand to other cities as well. Green Hive, which currently lists San Rafael, Calif. – based design software firm Autodesk and Dwell magazine among its sponsors, plans to bring in revenue through sponsorships and by leasing spaces to vendors.
